The Gypsy Baron 1969
Ennis Franciscan Musical Society took on 'The Gypsy Baron' for their twelfth production. With a cast of over sixty the group performed to sold out audiences throughout the week of April 20-27th.
Our producer of the show came from far afield to guide us to the stage. Mavis Stubb from London, was well known in amateur societies in Ireland and Great Britain, having produced over 250 productions. She was also an adjudicator in the Waterford Light Opera Festival when EFMS took part with Pink Champagne in 1962.
In leading roles for this show were Jack Wall, Maretta O Hehir, Pearl Brooks, Maureen McMahon, John O'Halloran, Paddy Browne, Ernest Dillon and Mairéad O'Donaghue.
The Gypsy Baron (German: Der Zigeunerbaron) is an operetta in three acts by Johann Strauss II, with a libretto by Ignaz Schnitzer. It premiered in 1885 in Vienna. The story is a romantic adventure set in Hungary, mixing love, mistaken identities, buried treasure, and social class themes.
