La Belle Helene 1972
La Belle Helene (Beautiful Helen) was produced by Ennis Franciscan Musical Society in March 1972. Our admission fee was 40p to the floor and 60p to the balcony. This show saw some stalwarts of the future society in their first big roles. Anna Monahan took on the role of
Cressida while Cecil McDonagh played Paris. Joe Carmody also featured in the role of Philocomus.
La Belle Hélène (1864) is an operetta by Jacques Offenbach, a witty parody of Greek mythology and Parisian society. It has three acts.
Brief Synopsis:The story retells the myth of Helen of Troy with comic twists. Helen, wife of Menelaus, is bored with married life. When Paris, prince of Troy, wins her love through divine manipulation, she finally gives in to passion and runs away with him — setting the stage for the Trojan War.
It’s filled with satire, flirtation, and catchy melodies, poking fun at both ancient heroes and 19th-century morals.
