Showboat 1971
As we moved into the 70's, Ennis Franciscan Musical Society began to perform shows that are still popular today. The first of these was Showboat.
It saw again the return of Maretta O'Hehir as our leading lady and Jack Wall as our lead male. Produced again by Mr Chris Fox, the show ran do eight performances in the Holy Family Auditorium Ennis. Admission to the show was 40p and 50p (old money).
Show Boat (1927) by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II follows the lives and loves of performers on the Mississippi River’s Cotton Blossom over several decades. It tackles themes of race, love, and hardship with an unusually serious story for its time.
Famous songs: “Ol’ Man River,” “Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man,” “Make Believe,” and “You Are Love.”
